Everyone’s a critic. But not everyone cares enough to critique the arts with equal parts context and fandom. I’ve been lucky to be surrounded by the arts my entire life: mom paints, dad plays music and my sister dances, as does my wife. Those influences led me to more recitals, gallery openings, concerts, book readings, premieres and performances than I could ever count, and then to formal arts criticism classes in college, two different stints as an arts editor and, eventually, a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Fellowship for theatre criticism at the USC Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.
